In a physical sense, a steady heartbeat is the rhythm of our heart as it pumps blood throughout our bodies. It is a vital component of our existence, sustaining our life by circulating oxygen and nutrients to our organs and tissues. Without a steady heartbeat, our bodies cannot function properly.

In a spiritual and emotional sense, being still refers to finding a sense of calm and inner peace amidst the chaos and busyness of life. It involves quieting our minds, letting go of distractions, and embracing a state of tranquility. Just as a steady heartbeat is essential for our physical well-being being still is crucial for our spiritual well-being.
The concept of being still is mentioned in the Tanach (Hebrew Bible) in Psalm 46:10 which says, "Be still and know that I am G-d; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
This verse encourages us to cultivate stillness and recognize the divine presence in our lives. By practicing stillness, we can develop a deeper connection with ourselves, others, and the Divine. It allows us to reflect, gain clarity, and find balance in our thoughts and emotions. Just as a steady heartbeat brings health and vitality to our bodies, being still can bring peace and serenity to our souls.
What is a steady heart?
In a metaphorical sense, a steady heart can refer to having a steadfast and unwavering spirit, particularly in times of challenge or adversity. It embodies resilience, determination, and the ability to remain steady, grounded, and true to one's values and beliefs.
In Jewish teachings, having a steady heart can be understood as maintaining hope and trust in G-d, even when faced with difficult circumstances.
In the book of Psalms, King David expresses this sentiment in Psalm 112:7, stating, "He will have no fear of bad tidings; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord."
A steady heart also implies emotional stability and a sense of inner strength. Amidst the ups and downs of life, maintaining emotional balance can be a valuable attribute.
Proverbs 4:23 advises, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
This verse reminds us of the importance of protecting our emotions and cultivating a steady heart. Having a steady heart allows us to face life's challenges with resilience and fortitude. It enables us to navigate difficult situations with poise, maintain a sense of purpose, and ultimately stay connected to our values.
Having peace with oneself is a state of inner harmony, contentment, and acceptance. It involves embracing who we are, acknowledging our strengths and weaknesses, and aligning our actions and thoughts with our values. The concept of having peace with oneself is rooted in the commandment to love one's neighbor as oneself and the recognition of the inherent worth and dignity of every individual.
To create peace and stillness within oneself is vital when recognizing our own humanity. We allow ourselves room to make mistakes and learn from them. It means understanding that we are constantly growing and evolving. It also gives us room to self-reflect or introspect. Taking time for introspection, self-awareness, and spiritual practices such as prayer, meditation, or study can help us connect with our inner selves and foster peace within.
Additionally, having peace with oneself involves finding balance in our lives. Balancing responsibilities, engaging in self-care, nurturing our relationships, and pursuing meaningful goals can all contribute to a still heart.
By cultivating a steady heart, we strive to become more grounded, centered, and steadfast individuals, which can positively impact our relationships, our outlook on life, and our overall well-being.
And remember that whatever you gave the day today, it was your best, and that's enough.
